What Is Asbestos?

Material & Usage

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that was used in the construction industry as insulation and fireproofing from the 1950s right up until the late 1990s. It was used in a huge variety of building materials such as ceiling tiles, pipe insulation and roofs.

Asbestos is often mixed with other materials, so it can be hard to ascertain whether it’s within buildings, regardless of how it looks. Often, asbestos can go undetected and undisturbed which does not cause any particular danger. It is when the material is disturbed, touched, or not removed safely that fibres are released into the air or absorbed into a water source.
